Omaha Mall Shooting

This woman should sit in jail for the rest of her life for this crime.

"He was a very helpful young man, but he was quiet," said Debora Maruca-Kovac, a surgical nurse whose family took in Hawkins after her 17- and 19-year-old sons befriended him.

But Maruca-Kovac said she saw nothing foreshadowing the horror Hawkins would inflict during his last moments alive. She regarded him so benignly that when he showed her an SKS semiautomatic rifle the night before his attack, she thought little of it, the Omaha World-Herald reported.

Hmmm. Let's see. A long history of depression, getting dumped by your girlfriend two weeks ago, getting fired last week, and a new semiautomatic rifle. A recipe for trouble? Nah. Just a normal teen.

WTF? Friday

Today is worthy of two WTF? posts. Al Gore wins a peace prize for making a movie about global warming. An interesting example of "peacemaking", since that is what the Nobel peace prize was intended to honor. Or maybe it's "piecemaking", as in piece-of-crap making.

I think the whole world has lost it's mind over this global warming issue. Nothing has been proven scientifically. Scientists have only issued a "consensus", which basically means "we're pretty sure". Where else does any scientist get way with "pretty sure"? These are the same scientists that were predicting thirty years ago the disasters soon to be brought about by man-made global cooling. If all it takes is thirty years for a trend to completely reverse, then we've got nothing to worry about.

We also have all unconsciously accepted the premise that the current climate is ideal. Who's to say? Maybe we're all better off if the climate is 5 degrees warmer. Nobody knows. Just like no one can tell me with any certainty if it's going to be sunny next Tuesday.

WTF? Friday

I thought I would save Fridays to post stories that just make me scratch my head and say WTF? Here is the first one. What kind of mother buys her recluse 14 year old son firearms?

a) one that is incomprehensibly stupid

b) one that deserves to be shot with said firearms

c) all of the above.

If you picked "c", then you are very smart.

Who's to blame when situations degenerate?

There are so many articles these days about the increase in foreclosures and the problems people are now facing with their increasing mortgage payments. All these articles point to the greedy mortgage bankers and how they lured innocent home buyers into taking out these risky mortgages. I am waiting for the article that rightly places a good amount of the blame on the stupid home buyer that can't figure out how much home he can afford. Hey, if you're making $50K a year, you can't afford a $500K house. The bankers are stupid for making the loan, and the homeowner is stupid for accepting the loan. Why is it that no one is willing to accept any personal responsibility these days?

Thanks to the B52's for the title quote.

I Hate Al Sharpton

for constantly fanning the flames of race relations in the US. This "minister" (ordained at age 9) and former tour manager for James Brown seems to thrive on being in the spotlight. Yes, there are lots racial injustices in this country (covering all races). Why not do something constructive rather than turning every issue into white vs. black? How come I never see him when it's black vs. white?

I'd Rather Sing

Inspired by equal parts of boredom and incredulity, I have decided to join the masses of the self-obsessed and start my own blog.

I've found myself increasingly wondering what is wrong with the world these days. Not just the obvious problems, but the insidious ones as well. It may be that as we age we're simply less apt to dismiss the things around us. The crochety factor. Or maybe the world really is changing for the worse.

So I'm envisioning this blog as a place were I can scream when I see the stupidity around me, without damaging my vocal chords. And I'm hoping it's also a place where I can sing when I find the good bits of life, without offending anyones ears.
